THE TAMING OF A SCOTTISH PRINCESS is the fourth and final installment in the "Hurst Amulet" series and was a good read overall, though not exactly what I was expecting. To be honest, I wasn't too impressed with this series and after reading the first three, put off this one for that very reason. However, I did enjoy the story more than I actually thought I would. Being the adventurer that Michael Hurst was, I was looking forward to an exciting read in an exotic locale for him and his wily assistant Jane. Instead the story starts out in England and the majority of it takes place on a small island in Scotland. I also expected it to be full of danger, adventure, and intrigue; but it was mostly about Michael solving the mystery surrounding Jane's past.

Now for what I did like, first and foremost being Jane and Michael. He was a bit gruff and demanding, but definitely one of those characters that grows on you. Jane was both charming and capable with a mind that was constantly on the move. It was nice reading about two people who genuinely liked and respected each other too. I loved them as a couple and thought their zest and passion for life made them a perfect pair. In the end there weren't a whole bunch of surprises or twists, but the dialogue and chemistry between Jane and Michael was what kept me reading. Watching them match wits was also fun and entirely entertaining to say the least. I excepted something more where the amulet was concerned but oh well, it was still a good book.

P.S. There's also another story titled "Much Ado About Marriage" which is sort of a prequel I guess. I haven't yet read it so I can't recommend it or not, but just wanted to let those who weren't aware of its connection to this series know about it.

The Taming of a Scottish Princess The Hurst Amulet Karen Hawkins 9781439175958 Books Reviews

I love all of Ms. Hawkin's books, this one being true to her style; a funny, sexy page turner. I was super frustrated that I received my copy right as I started my work week and only had short bits of time to read it. What would have taken me a day to devour was stretched out over a 4 day period.... extra suspense and longing. Since I don't watch TV anymore I use romance books to fill the void in my life that shows like 'Friends' held, so I expect fast moving entertainment.
Just finished reading The Taming Of A Scottish Princess and must say that it was truly an excellent read! Karen Hawkins never fails to tell a wonderful love story with just enough suspense and plenty of humor! Her writing style flows so well that you don't want to put it down! I absolutely love her sense of humor! If you are looking for a book that takes you away from everyday stress then pick up Karen Hawkins! You will be hooked from the beginning and and you will be in for a special treat!
Loved the ending to the series. I'd been amused with the notes and letters and diary entries in the previous books about the amazing Miss Jane Smythe-Haughton, and thought the book did a fantastic job filling out her secrets. Literally laughed out loud with the continued notes and diary inserts, and really enjoyed another strong heroine. The ending was a bit anti-climactic, different than I would have expected, though sweet in it's own way.

For newcomers, you should definitely start with the first book in order to have a clear understanding.
I really couldn't give this a 5-star rating, but I did enjoy reading it. I just felt there were opportunities missed (for the story line) and a few that just didn't quite cut it for me. A 5-star book is one that I cannot put down...I put this one down and just didn't feel that "rush" to keep reading. When you have characters that you really could care less what happens to them, you really need either more to see them as a villain or hero; or, less, so that you know they are just a casual character that doesn't impact the story. I love Karen Hawkins' books, but, I always want just a little more to give the story depth.
Someone once said that the true test of a good book is that when you finish it, you miss the characters. I will miss the Hurst family, but happily, I bought hard copies of the series and I can visit any time I want. I was so happy that they finally found the amulet and this woman Michael had complained about in previous books (Of course!) turned out to be the love of his life. My only complaint was that as an ending, I wish all the Hurst could have come together. But, Karen Hawkins is a great writer, who knows, they could show up again some day! Loved the book, and like I said, I will miss the series!
Michael Hurst is a famous explorer, chasing mysteries around the globe. When he discovers that his no-nonsense assistant Jane is hiding a mysterious past of her own, he's intrigued. From Scottish princess to lowly assistant? He has to know the truth! As with any other hunt he's been on, he will not rest until he finds the answers.

Jane is well aware of Michael's innumerable charms. The thing is, he's never turned those charms on her before, so she's never had to try to resist him. But once he discovers the truth of her past, will he lose interest, as she's seen him do so many times before?

The Taming of a Scottish Princess is a fun, fast-paced, sweetly romantic story with a nice amount of steam to enhance the sweetness. I really enjoyed it!
Story takes place 1822, mostly in Scottland.

Hero Michael is a big/tall Egyptologist. Heroine Jane is a small/petite "crack cryptographer" & linguist who's been his assistant x 4 yrs. She's secretely in love with him. He's arrogant, rude & has poor people skills. Except for instances when he choses to be charming.

He's not attracted to her as a woman. Prefers buxom women. He has a one-track mind of finding the rare missing Hurst Amulet, once owned by his family. Over time, he begins to question his priorities & slowly starts to fall for her. Especially her sexy mind & uniqueness. She shields her personal life, but he's always intrigued by a mystery.

This is a witty, page-turner, HR adventure. Michael is a bit of a self-absorbed jerk at start, but we slowly see his other layers. She is serene, but outspoken by nature. They have great chemistry. The sex scenes are mild, but the romance is the thing.
