Starting in 1928, the families who live in a big farmhouse near Dusty Corners, Alabama are plagued and tormented by paranormal phenomena down through the years. In fact, the entire community seems to be cursed and haunted. But why? An atmospheric, old-fashioned ghost story that follows each family as they fight for survival and try to unravel the mystery of a fogbound spirit.

Fogbound A Ghost Story eBook Cara Swann

Really good ghost story. Begins in 1928 in small town in Alabama. Tells the story of a haunted house and the three families who lived there and all the misfortunes that befell each family who made their home in this house. They tie up the hauntings and the cause in the last few chapters. I loved this book because it followed the normal guidelines of a haunting. Plus, I loved the time period.

Fogbound A Ghost Story eBook Cara Swann Reviews

I liked this book not just because it was scary, which it was, but also because of how well developed the multiple plot lines were. The story revolves around an entity that supposedly haunts a house. The first haunting occurs when the first family builds and moves into a house. Subsequent parts of the book revolve around other families who move into this house despite its "reputation". All families have a well developed history and significant characteristics that move the plot along. Accordingly there is a large build up of tension and curiosity about this entity that frightens family after family. The only complaint I have is that I wish there was more detail about what happens to some major characters at the end.
I wasn't expecting from this book; another story about someone moving into a haunted house. I was NOT expecting a story that spanned several generations. At first it felt like it was told in a slightly rushed manner but by part two, I was able to settle into the rhythm and thoroughly enjoy this book. After a point, you could even see what was coming and wondered when it would end. That's a good quality for a book. The last part of the book is what pulled it all together, though it left several questions unanswered. Still, I enjoyed it and look forward to reading it again.

Spoiler; don't get too attached to the characters.
I'll just come out and say it, Fogbound bored me to tears.

While a novel about a haunted house is nothing new, I give props to the author for trying something different. Here, we have a novel outlining the history of a haunted house through the eyes of various generations and families. That idea was intriguing enough to get me to buy the book. Unfortunately, everything about the book is disappointing.

First, the characters. While the author does a serviceable job of writing the various characters, there isn't anything that stands out. I simply didn't care about any of the characters, even the ones that you're supposed to care about. Some characters are selfish and unlikable to the point where I was relived instead of horrified when they died. Other characters are stupid enough that I literally groaned aloud. Take one character,  a woman who genuinely believes her house is haunted. This woman looks to a psychic for advice and the psychic tells this character to just leave everything alone, relax an stop thinking about the haunting. The character does just that and things, surprise surprise, don't end up getting better. Sitting around trying to ignore the haunting never works in these sorts of stories. It was quite simply stupid writing.

As I said, I thought the idea of tracing the history of a haunted house through various families and generations was interesting. But this ends up being the primary weakness of the whole novel. There are four parts to the novel, each part telling the story of one family residing in the haunted house. Instead of being fresh, this just ends up getting very repetitive. One family moves in, things get creepy and then tragedy strikes. In comes the next family. They move in; things get creepy and then tragedy strikes. Cue the next family. See where I'm going with this? The novel gets repetitive very quickly and this structure actually lessened my enjoyment of the book.

Finally, the flow of the novel itself is off. Each family's story ends kind of abruptly with no build up. The supposed climax is more of a whimper that didn't actually do much for me. In addition, the "mystery" of the haunting is cliche beyond words. **SPOILER ALERT** the ghost was an innocent black man who was lynched by racist whites. This is a story set in the South. Anybody could have seen this coming a mile away.

In the end. Fogbound didn't do a thing for me. I struggled to finish a story that seemed to go on forever. The characters were boring, the plot repetitive and the ending cliche. There was also a distinct lack of anything truly creepy. Which is a shame because the author's actual word-smithing is pretty good.

2 out of 5 stars
Why is my question. I needed to think about this ghostly tale and how to rate it as I am not even sure the title is appropriate. The story of an angry ghost is good but it takes forever and a lot of mysterious deaths to find out why. The victim, aka the ghost, supposedly puts a curse on those involved and their families. However, it seems to me it was anyone in the house. Spoiler alert, I never saw the connection between the hauntings and the train wreck and why only one ghost there?
A couple other things that bothered me was there was apparently only one ghost but ghostly orbs all over the place and why the traffic accidents? Moreover, did the ghost finally
decide to talk ? I was unclear how this story finally came to light.

Far too many questions unanswered in this tale. Just my opinion.
