It should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me that I would give this poem the highest rating. Lord Byron's "Don Juan" is the greatest piece of writing I have ever read. It is my favorite piece of writing. I like it better than Joyce's "A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man" and Conrad's "Heart of Darkness." Any serious student of literature, who has not already read this masterpiece, needs to read this sublime piece of writing. I have read it enormous times and always I learn something new and never do I fail to marvel at its brilliance, beauty, and wit.Tags : Don Juan [Lord George Gordon Byron, TG Steffan, E Steffan, WW Pratt, Susan J. Don Juan Lord George Gordon Byron TG Steffan E Steffan WW Pratt Susan J Wolfson Peter J Manning 9780140424522 Books Reviews
I love this work. Byron is witty, lyrical, and incredibly accomplished in Don Juan.
The book was in excellent condition, just as described.
5 stars
Don juan itself is an awesome book 5 stars. It is a wonderful experience to read funny, creative, imaginative, scandalous witty, etc. I liked it much more than other of Byron's works. I thought it was (ideologically and morally) a mind opening experience. The kindle edition, to which I give 3 stars, maybe 4, is very readable format wise but does not provide the notes as links nor numbers them which one would expect or even demand from an electronic edition; rather, one must manually go to the end of the book (which would work in a physical edition) and look up the information one needs, something impossible to do while trying to read the work.
This play is a treat to read, and I can't wait to see it performed. Moliere, however, must share the spotlight with the translator, Richard Wilbur, who shows an elegant flair for conversational prose. The contemporary American reader lives in a land of waning religiosity, yet one in which theocracy is ironically gaining influence in national politics. It is in this context that we have to smile, if not laugh, when Don Juan says,
"It's no longer shameful to be a dissembler; hypocrisy is now a fashionable vice and all the fashionable vices pass for virtues. The part of the God-fearing man is the best possible role to play nowadays, and in our present society the hypocrite's profession has extraordinary advantages. It's an art whose dishonesty always goes unchallenged...The hypocrite, by means of pious pretenses, attaches himself to the devout, and anyone who then assails him is set upon by a great phalanx of the godly...The true believers are easily hoodwinked by the false...I can't tell you how many men I know who, by means of a feigned devotion, have glossed over the sins of their youth, wrapped themselves in the cloak of religion, and in that holy disguise are now free to be the worst of scoundrels!"
's rules prohibit me from disclosing the ending, though it has been known for some 331 years, but I will tell you that it leaves Don Juan's valet, Sganarelle, wondering how he'll ever get his back pay.
Its a classic. if you found your way here you already know what your getting.
Lord Byron is something else. This is a superbly crafted poem of great mastery. And it is devastatingly funny throughout. Highly recommended,
Warning !!!!!! Please read this warning. I bought this book for my girlfriend who has a Masters in Literature. She loves Don Juan. This is not the full book. This starts with cantos vii which is about half way through the story. I read all the reviews about how wonderful the story is and that may be true but this is only the second half. I don't understand why they don't say that in the description. For all the five star reviews, you know this is only half the story right? was great and I returned this book with no problems but still it was very disappointing.
