Miss Jennie Bemyss was in a position that any intelligent young lady would envy.

The wealthy, worldly Marquis of Charrington proposed a marriage of convenience that would leave him free to pursue his pleasures, and leave Jennie free of his undoubtedly depraved desires. At the same time, handsome charming Guy Chalmers, whom Jennie had loved since childhood, proposed to aid her in enjoying her freedom to the fullest.

Jennie should have felt relief at being left alone at last by a man whom she should properly despise. She should have felt even happier to be courted by a man whom she had so long adored. Why, then, did she feel so confused?

ABOUT THE SERIES

What could be more engaging than the women who rise from the commoner classes and minor nobility to triumph in the unforgiving society of Regency Period London. Read about women who have lost their fortunes, country girls at their first season, and new wives who can’t resist temptation in the nine titles of the Changing Fortunes Collection.

This was an interesting regency. I loved and hated all the characters in equal measure with the exception of the true villain who was incredibly nasty. For some reason the hero was a fop even though he wasn't and the heroine was a spoiled child though she really wasn't. I don't really understand why the marriage happened and I certainly don't think the hero did either. Apparently he fell in love with the woman he saw within the child and went ahead with the betrothal. The subplot was little better. Somehow the two best friends get together even though they are horribly mismatched in temperament. This of course only adds to the drama. My conclusion is that these characters are people with very human flaws. I don't understand why the hero feels the need to put on the disguise of being a dandy, but he does. Perhaps it is his social armor, a way of keeping society at a distance since he came home from the war. The genius of this book is the subtlety. At first glance this book is merely a regency Rom com, but the questions it forces the reader to ask show a hidden depth. Masterfully done. An Excellent work. Very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.

I listened to this on KU. After really enjoying the start of this book, it deteriorated in the second half. The h was betrothed to the H since she was a child but she is in love with her first cousin. The H hadn't been intending to marry the h until he met her and apparently fell in love with her at first sight. The h is wilful and spoiled and really behaved like a brat. The main characters agree to a marriage of convenience at first, with the H wanting the h to grow up a bit as she was very young. I loved the H to begin with, he was smart and wise in the way he dealt with the h at the beginning. Unfortunately with the cousin stirring up trouble at every turn, the H then gets mad with the h and the book deteriorated after that. I didn't like the h continuing to kiss her cousin in the beginning but that's just me.
Plot is predictable and banal and the writing does not transcend these limitations. Beaton may have mined this vein out.
Really enjoyable reading. A good clean book with no foul language. I would recommend it to others who are looking for a good book.
Nothing fancy but a fun read. I love the character of the Marquis. The book could have been edited a little better.
A book you can pick up or put down when life intrudes. A light, interesting good read of this historical period.
An illiterate but beautiful young lady is betrothed to a stranger. She has through her life been besotted with her male cousin and developed many misconceptions regarding married life. Many obstacles get in the way of true love.
Each Marion Chesney story that I read is a perfect regency romance with wicked villains, handsome, arrogant heroes and headstrong beautiful heroines. If the regency romance is a favorite genre, you will enjoy The Marquis Takes a Bride.
