I tried to read this book many years ago and never finished. The characters just didn't pop for me and the romance was too good girl turns bad boy. It was a well written story but it just didn't have the pizzazz I was looking for back then.

Now 10 years later I find out that this has been Incorporated into the Dark Hunter series. Wah? huh? I wish I had known years ago because reading this first would have made the three Dragon books in her Dark Hunter series make so much more sense.

But in a way reading this now, definitely made me appreciate the story so much more than I ever would have before. I got to see the beginnings of some of my favorite side characters, including Blaise and his grumpy gargoyle friends.

I can see where people reading this as a stand alone wouldn't have nearly the appreciation of the time jumps as those of us who are used to the Dark Hunter and Were Hunters. Even with that appreciation, it still felt a little out of place in the storyline. Though the I must admit the gargoyles at the convention made me really laugh.

Even with my love of all things Dark Hunter, this is not one of her best. I kept waiting for something, anything significant to happen with the red shirt. Even the minor thing that did happen was such a let down.

I thought the beginning was a little slow and the ending a little abrupt. I wish it had taken more than a couple of days for them to get it on. I know with all the magic it shouldn't matter. However, even a side comment about say months of them planting a garden together, or something equally ridiculous, just to show the passage of time before she fell for him would have helped me enjoy this story more. Insta-love just doesn't really do anything for me.

This book and Knight of Darkness fit in right after Kiss the NIght in the Dark Hunter series if that's something that helps you.

If you're looking to read this book as part of the Dark Hunter series, I say yes absolutely. You will get a better appreciation for some of the characters, especially the ones from the Dragon Dark Hunter books.

If you're looking at this book to read as a standalone, I'd say if you love good girl turns bad boy, soul mate tropes, or time travel shenanigans, then this is a story you'll like. If you don't like one of more of these tropes, I'd give it a pass.

Lady Emily wants a husband but her father refuses to let his daughters wed because he lost his wife and two eldest daughter in bearing a child. So lady Emily is very mischievous and decides she wishes to wed her new guardian but the task proves harder then she thought but enlist the help of her new lords brother.

Great novel if you love novels with a broken hero then this for you.
While I felt the story for this was better than the first Lords of Avalon book, it had some of the same issues.

Too many references to modern TV and movies that I just couldn't get behind here. Yes, time travel is a thing, but unless they spend years upon years in the future they are not going to be talking with that much slang. It's not like the modern Dark Hunter books where these 1000 year old characters really have lived in modern times long enough by now to talk like that.

I saw Monty Python's Holy Grail decades ago and remember little to nothing about it and yet felt like I needed to go back and watch it just to understand what was going on through the middle of their journey.

I did not like Merewyn for way too much of this story. She's extremely vain, very shallow, and is only good as the damsel in distress. Of course she does become worthy of Varian in the end, but it took way too long to get there.

I did like that this wasn't an insta-love, soulmate trope like the last one, too bad Merewyn was so unlikable for their long "courtship".

Blaise was once again a bright spot, but I suspect that's because I know him so we'll from all the Dark Hunter books he's been in. I'm not sure how well he comes across without that deep character love.

I really loved Varian, his background, the take on the Grail knights, and Lancelot's less than pristine honor. To me this was the best parts of the story. It just wasn't enough to carry the book more than 3 stars.

If you're reading this as part of the Dark Hunter series, I say it's probably worth the read to get a better handle on the Veil, Camelot, Avalon and the beings that live there. But it can also be skipped because I read all the Dark Hunter books long before I even knew the Lords of Avalon were supposed to be a part of the series.

If you're looking to this as a great twist on the Camelot myth, I'd give it a pass.
